What is Resveratrol
Resveratrol is a naturally occurring anti-oxidant and plant chemical found in: The skins of red grapes, red wine, purple grape juice, blueberries, cranberries, peanuts, and also in abundance within the Japanese Knotweed plant (Polygonum Cuspidatum). Numerous studies suggest that Resveratrol has shown promising results in people aging more slowly and living longer with many health benefits. This has become known as the “French Paradox” whereby the French – despite a high fat diet and high consumption of red wine have a much lower incident
of heart disease compared to the American population.
Resveratrol exists in two different forms referred to as: Cis-resveratrol and Trans-Resveratrol. Trans-resveratrol is the most commonly available commercially and is where the most benefit of Resveratrol comes from. One glass of Red wine yields approximately one milligram of Resveratrol. Dr. David Sinclair, a leading Resveratrol researcher at Harvard Medical School, suggests a daily dosage of 100-150 milligrams of Trans-Resveratrol for the average adult.
Studies supporting Resveratrol suggest that antioxidants found in Resveratrol called polyphenols help protect the lining of blood vessels in your heart. These antioxidants come in two main forms: flavonoids and nonflavonoids.
- Flavonoids. These antioxidants are found in a variety of foods, including grape juice, apples, oranges, onions, tea and cocoa. Flavonoids can also be found in other types of alcohol, such as white wine and beer, however they contain small amounts. Red wine has shown higher levels.
- Nonflavonoids. These powerful antioxidants found in Resveratrol have recently been the subject of numerous studies since they appear to help prevent arteries from becoming clogged with fatty blockages. However, these studies mostly involved mice — not humans. Resveratrol is the nonflavonoid that's received the most attention from researchers.
Resveratrol Benefits:
Many studies suggest that Resveratrol offers increased protection against:
- Heart disease
- Cancer
- Suppresses Prostate Cancer development
- Type II Diabetes & Insulin Resistance. It is being investigated for it’s potential positive affect on blood-sugar levels
- Reversed or delayed the onset of Alzheimer’s
- Anti-inflammatory
- Anti-depressant
- Reduces bad cholesterol
- Protects against Artery Damage and prevents blood clots
- Helps the body rid itself of toxic heavy metals exposed from the environment
- May help treat Fatty Liver buildup
- Prevented pre-fat cells from turning into mature fat cells which may help fight fat
- Studies have shown Resveratrol destroys cancer cells from within and helps the effectiveness of chemotherapy and radiation cancer treatment by making cancer cells more sensitive to those treatments and helps to trigger cancer cell death
- Reduces the appearance of aging
- Increased life expectancy
Resveratrol & Aging
Resveratrol is considered to be the missing link of anti-aging by many scientists. Many are calling this one of the greatest discoveries in the last 100 years. Resveratrol is known to reactivate the anti-aging gene within our bodies. In concentrated forms, Resveratrol is said to provide benefits from slowing or even reversing some of the effects of the aging process.
Resveratrol plays a role in not only treating skin disease but preventing skin cancer as well. It has many positive effects in helping to keep skin smooth, elastic and as an anti-aging substance helping you to look younger. Resveratrol is known to help with breast and skin cancer, colon, gastric problems, prostate, esophageal, pancreatic cancer, tumors and leukemia as well. These diseases are major contributing factors in making people appear older than their actual age. Resveratrol is shown to enhance and increase physical stamina and endurance. Resveratrol treats neurodegenerative disease and helps with fading memory.
Vitamin D3
Vitamin D3 is essential and one of the more important nutritional tools available for improving our overall health. However, fear of skin cancer and extensive use of sunscreen lotion have left many deficient in life-sustaining bone building Vitamin D3. Scientists have recognized the importance of Vitamin D3 in bone health for more than a century and it's alarming to find such a large percentage of individuals deficient in this essential nutrient, which has hormone-like activity. Studies have shown that as we age, our bodies are less able to produce required quantities of Vitamin D3 and that due to age-related kidney functions may require older people to increase their Vitamin D3 intake to maintain the same blood levels as younger people.
Vitamin D deficiencies can lead to: heart disease, bone loss, depression, back pain, cancer, insulin resistance, impaired immunity, high blood pressure, fibromyalgia, and macular degeneration. Increases of Vitamin D may improve Cardiovascular Health and help reduce (PAD) - peripheral arterial disease. Stress can also deplete Vitamins and anti-oxidants in the body.
Vitamin D promotes healthy teeth and bones. It also promotes calcium absorption, bone mass building, the prevention of bone loss, and it protects against muscle weakness. In proper dosages it lowers the risk of colon, breast, and prostate cancers. Immune system functioning is improved, autoimmune diseases can be prevented, and rheumatoid arthritis is improved with vitamin D.
Vitamin D prevents and treats rickets as well as postmenopausal osteoporosis. It also prevents fractures in those at risk for osteoporosis, corticosteroid induced osteoporosis, and osteomalacia. The vitamin also treats hypoglycemia, bone disorders, psoriasis, squamous cell cancers, vitiligo, and scleroderma. Multiple Sclerosis can be treated and the vitamin prevents the development of Type 1 diabetes.
The current USRDA for vitamin D is 400 IU. However, many medical experts believe this is far too low. The National Academy of Sciences has set a Safe Upper Limit and recommended daily dose of up to 2000 IU. Researchers conducting recent studies have shown that 10,000 IU is the Safe Upper limit and are advising the general public to consume more of this essential nutrient. Due to Vitamin D3's high safety profile of doses up to 10,000 IU and the importance of Vitamin D3's role in our overall health, consuming 2,000-4,000 IU per day during times of the year when sunlight is less prevalent is a wise choice to improve overall health.
